Manual Therapy

Manual therapy is a hands-on treatment approach used by physiotherapists to alleviate pain, improve mobility, and enhance overall function. This technique involves the skilled use of the hands to manipulate, mobilise, and massage muscles, joints, and soft tissues. Manual therapy can effectively treat a variety of musculoskeletal issues, such as back pain, neck pain, joint dysfunction, and muscle tightness, by directly targeting areas of tension and restriction.

How manual therapy can help:
  • Assessment: We begin with a comprehensive evaluation to identify the source of your pain or dysfunction, including a physical examination and discussion of your symptoms and medical history.
  • Personalised Treatment Plan: Based on the assessment, we create a tailored manual therapy plan that may include:
    • Joint Mobilisation and Manipulation: Techniques to improve joint movement and reduce pain.
    • Soft Tissue Mobilisation: Massage and stretching techniques to relieve muscle tension and improve flexibility.
    • Myo-fascial Release: Targeting the fascia (connective tissue) to release tightness and improve movement.
    • Trigger Point Therapy: Applying pressure to specific points in the muscles to relieve pain and tension.
  • Integrated Approach: Manual therapy is often combined with other treatments, such as exercise therapy, dry needling, and patient education, to provide a comprehensive approach to your rehabilitation.
  • Ongoing Support: Regular follow-up sessions to monitor progress, adjust the treatment plan, and provide continuous support to ensure optimal recovery.

Manual therapy can treat a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions, including back pain, neck pain, joint dysfunction, muscle tightness, headaches, and sports injuries. It is also effective for post-surgical rehabilitation and chronic pain management.

Manual therapy techniques are generally gentle and should not cause significant pain. Some discomfort may be experienced during certain techniques, but this is typically brief and followed by relief. Your physiotherapist will ensure that the treatment is within your comfort level.

The number of sessions required varies depending on the severity and duration of your condition. Some patients experience relief after just a few sessions, while others may need ongoing treatment as part of a comprehensive rehabilitation program.

Yes, manual therapy is often integrated with other treatments such as exercise therapy, dry needling, and education to provide a holistic approach to rehabilitation. Combining treatments can enhance the overall effectiveness of your care.

No referral is necessary to start undergoing manual therapy treatment at Avalon Physio as it is a part of your normal physiotherapy care and something many physiotherapists will do. In Australia, physiotherapy is first-point-of-contact healthcare which means you can walk in off the street, no referral necessary!
