Headaches & Vertigo

Headaches and vertigo can significantly impact daily life, causing discomfort and limiting activities. Cervicogenic headaches originate from issues in the cervical spine (neck), while BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo) is a common cause of vertigo, resulting from disturbances in the inner ear. At Avalon Physio, we offer specialised treatment programs to address both cervicogenic headaches and BPPV vertigo, aiming to alleviate symptoms and improve overall quality of life.

cervicogenic headaches:
  • Assessment: We begin with a thorough evaluation to identify the source of your headaches, including a detailed history and physical examination focusing on the cervical spine.
  • Manual Therapy: Hands-on techniques to relieve muscle tension, improve joint mobility, and reduce pain in the neck and shoulders.
  • Exercise Therapy: Customised exercises to strengthen neck muscles, improve posture, and enhance flexibility.
  • Posture Education: Guidance on maintaining proper posture to reduce strain on the cervical spine and prevent headaches.
  • Ergonomic Advice: Recommendations on workstation setup and daily activities to minimise neck strain and prevent headaches.
BPPV (Vertigo):
  • Assessment: A comprehensive evaluation to diagnose BPPV, including specific tests such as the Dix-Hallpike manoeuvre to identify vertigo triggers.
  • Canalith Repositioning Manoeuvre: Techniques like the Epley manoeuvre to move displaced ear crystals back to their proper position, relieving vertigo symptoms.
  • Vestibular Rehabilitation: Exercises to improve balance, coordination, and the ability to manage vertigo episodes.
  • Education and Self-Management: Teaching you techniques to manage vertigo symptoms at home and prevent future episodes.
  • Follow-Up Care: Regular sessions to monitor progress, adjust treatment plans, and ensure long-term relief.
FAQ about headaches & BPPV (Vertigo):

Cervicogenic headaches are caused by issues in the cervical spine, such as joint dysfunction, muscle tension, or nerve compression. Poor posture, neck injuries, and repetitive strain can contribute to these headaches.

BPPV is characterised by brief episodes of dizziness triggered by changes in head position. If you experience vertigo when turning over in bed, looking up, or bending down, BPPV might be the cause. A physiotherapist can perform specific tests to diagnose BPPV.

Manual therapy is generally not painful. Some techniques may cause mild discomfort, but they are designed to relieve tension and improve mobility. Your physiotherapist will ensure the treatment is comfortable and effective.

Many patients experience significant relief from BPPV vertigo after just one or two sessions of canalith repositioning manoeuvre. However, some may require additional vestibular rehabilitation exercises for optimal results.

Physiotherapy can significantly reduce the frequency and intensity of cervicogenic headaches and BPPV vertigo. While some individuals may achieve complete relief, others may need ongoing management and preventive strategies to maintain results.
